Giving pink roses on Mother’s Day is a popular tradition in France.

Roses are popular flowers in France and a fixture in French culture thanks to Empress Joséphine (1763-1814), Napoléon Bonaparte's first wife who loved gardening.

Josephine had a passion for roses and created the greatest rose garden ever known in Europe (at the time).

She wanted to have every rose known in the world and it’s believed she may have had as many as 250 different varieties.

Her rose garden popularized breeding roses throughout France and inspired generations of rosarians, and countless rose gardens worldwide.

Part of the estate was dedicated to this rose collection and is where she created the first garden using just one type of plant, roses.

By 1830 about 2,500 different rose varieties were available to French rose lovers.
