For the love of Mom

Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 14th

Hopefully your Mom is still with you, and you will be celebrating with her. Or maybe your family will be celebrating you.

In my opinion there is more love shared on Mother’s Day than on Valentine’s Day. Makes sense doesn’t it. It’s a different kind of love, for sure, but think of all the folks celebrating Mother’s Day. It’s universal. We send cards, purchase gifts and flowers, go to lunch, brunch or dinner. We bring along the whole family.

That’s a whole lot of love.

I lost my Mom in 2007. Well, no I can’t say I lost her. Even though she’s in heaven, there is not a day that goes by that I don’t think of her, or I am reminded of her in some small way. She’s with me all the time.

Mom

There are times when I pass by a mirror or glass and catch a glimpse of her in my reflection. Some days I will say something, and I’ll think, “Oh my gosh! I sound just like my mom!” I do a lot of things just like she did. I’m sure you do too. It’s a way of keeping our Moms close to us.

Did you know baby chicks can distinguish their moms clucking from other hens? Mother hens can be fiercely protective. It amazes me that they know exactly how many chicks are theirs. As if they are always taking count. They lead their chicks to safety, to food and to roost. Chicks learn by watching their mom.

Our Moms aren’t so very different.  My mom could stop me in my tracks with one shout of my name. I just knew by the inflection in her voice whether she was shouting a warning, calling me home for dinner, or she had discovered something I had done. Oh yes, I could positively distinguish my mom’s voice from my friend’s mom calling them. It took just one look from her, as she leaned forward in the pew at church, and I knew I better quit giggling. I believed she actually DID have eyes in the back of her head until I had my own kids. Then I made them believe the same thing.

Moms: You gotta love ‘em.

If you will be having Mom over for lunch, brunch, or afternoon tea, I have a great resource for you for recipes. Her name is Lisa Hatfield. She has a blog called Delicious Table. I always look forward to getting her email alerting me of some new posts. Her directions are easy to follow, and you will even find videos.
